1800s. From Canova to the Fourth State

Exhibition in Rome

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to Italian 19th century painting, a century during which our country was conquering the rest of Europe with the likes of Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, but still wasn't considered to excel culturally.

The over 100 masterpieces to go on show at the Scuderie del Quirinale show how this century boasted a rich selection of interesting paintings. Artists such as Appiani, Palagi, Hayez and representatives of the Milanese Romantic School, the Macchiaioli (Fattori, Lega, Signorini) in Florence, the Vedutists of the Posillipo and Morelli School in Naples created works that were free of classical restrictions and who nourished themselves with ideas from the Risorgimento and Romanticism. These paintings showed everyday scenes and highlighted the existential unease of modern man

Renoir. Tradition and innovation

Exhibition in Rome

The city of Limoges gave birth to one of the greatest Impressionist artists, Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The artist was a huge fan of music and profoundly smitten with female sensuality - female nudes were among his favourite subjects. His first significant experiences in the field of painting were had together with other talented artists Monet and Sisley, with whom he painted outdoors under the sky of Fointainebleau.

Approximately 150 creations on loan from Italian and international museums go on show and explore Renoir's human and artistic journey. These works are suffused with sun, light and colour; they are snapshots of intimate and tender moments, immersed in an atmospheric intensity

Where: Complesso del Vittoriano, via San Pietro in Carcere
When: From 7 Mar to 29 Jun

Roman Victories

Exhibition in Rome

The bas-reliefs, bronzes, coins, sculptures and paintings on display aim to get the concept of 'Roman vistories' across to the public by telling us about the ceremonies and festivities surrounding the historic big battles.

The first section of the exhibition relates to victories and their development, from the Etruscan to the Hellenistic worlds; the second section shows images of illustrious victors and the illustrious defeated - among which Caesar, Pompeius and Octavian - and reproduces battle scenes. The last section is devoted to conquered peoples: the Greeks, the Judeans, the Dacians and the Barbarians

China 21st Century. Art between identity and transformation

China is examined by its contemporary artists:Events in Rome: china 21st Century Chen Chieh-Jen, Liu Xiaodong, Sun Yuan e Peng Yu, Wang Du, Wang Qingsong, Weng Fen and Yang Fudong. Each has his/her own style but all denounce the sort of modern society that alienates the individual.
Located somewhere between communism and capitalism, China is changing to the core of its genetic code at vertiginous speed. This is having an impact on the country's citizens.
The Chinese today live in a context of chaos, mass consumption, nihilism and hyper-realism and these works examine the modern lives of these people in an intimate and psychological dimension.
A series of film screenings entitled "New Chinese Cinema 1992-2007" curated by Marco Muller and readings with contemporary Chinese authors in "The new Chinese Literature" curated by Maria Rita Masci will take place alongside the exhibition.

GALLERIA BORGHESE: CANOVA AND LA VENERE VINCITRICE IN ROME

(until Until 3 Feb 2008)

The Galleria Borghese in Rome will house until the 3rd of February an exhibition completely dedicated to Antonio Canova and his masterpiece, the "Venere Vincitrice".

The second act in the "10 Great Exhibitions" series celebrates Antonio Canova 250 years after the date of his birth

Canova represents the apotheosis of Italian neoclassicism, an artistic period in which mythological subjects, political personalities and metaphysical themes were explHoursdCanova in Rome:la Venere Vincitrice

La Venere Vincitrice, work of whom the Galleria Borghese is most proud, is a marble sculpture commissioned to Canova by the Borghese family, with whom the artist had a long relationship, and it's not a simple sculptured portrait but it's a fine, elegant, careful celebration of the beautiful and the victory, it's a Paolina Bonaparte represented as a goddess.
The Gallery will house about 50 exhibitions coming from the museums of all over the world, and with this exposition is represented Canova's whole career and his creative process, paying attention in particular to the continuous elaboration of the Venus theme.

The Galleria Borghese will serve as the venue in which to admire over 50 paintings, drawings and clay models. 16 major marble sculptures are also on display and include some spectacular pieces, such as the "Three Graces", the "Sleeping Nymph", "Amor and Psyche", the "Naiad" and the complete series of "Amorini".

This exhibition wants to give to critics, art historians and simple fans the possibility to understand More deeply the greatest Geniuses of the art of '500 and '600 adding to the works of the Gallery sculptures and paintings coming from the best museums in the world.

The Galleria Borghese, indeed, houses artistic works too delicate to be moved or transferred and for this reason collective exhibitions in all the great museums of the world have suffered the lack of this works. So to avoid this problem the Galleria Borghese has decided to promote this exhibition dedicated each time to a different artist, and during this period other works from all over the world will reach those kept in the Gallery.
"Antonio Canova and La Venere Vincitrice" are exposed at the Galleria Borghese in Rome until the 3rd of February.

This exhibition, in the celebrated Galleria Borghese, thus pays homage to the importance of Canova the artist, as well as his importance to the collection itself; Canova had tried to oppose the sale of the famous collection from Camillo Borghese to Napoleon for what that collection mean to him (Hermaphrodite's bed, for example, could well be seen as a model for the Paolina), and indeed, in recognition of his efforts, was employed in the recovery of Italian works as the Inspector of the Art collection of the Church.

Avish Khebrehzadeh

Khebrehzadeh was born in Tehran at the end of the 1970s and was trained as a painter at the Academy of Rome. She now lives between Washington and Italy. The MACRO has put on an exhibition in which we can admire many paintings made out of wood and plaster but also two very particular creations: video-animations projected on mega-drawings composed of resin, olive oil, ink and cartoons. The sweet music of the videos amalgamates with the delicateness of the drawings, and effectively recreates the atmosphere of the traditional fairytales Khebrehzadeh was told during her childhood...
